The Dutch Plant Farm finds its roots in the sandy soil of the Netherlands. It was there that the owners’ grandfather, George Mens, started a flower bulb business with a distribution location in New Jersey.

With George’s retirement, the business was handed down to his sons and became Mens Brothers Inc. When a fire destroyed the company’s warehouse in Holland in 1978, George’s son, Jack,  decided to start over with a new idea in a new place.  He opened his own garden center in Frederick, MD in March of 1981 and named it, aptly, The Dutch Plant Farm.  Jack and his wife, Karin, oversaw operations until their retirement in 2009, when they turned the business over to sons Mike and Trevor Mens.
